Sharad Patel, MD

Sharad Patel, MD is a critical care physician and nephrologist with advanced training in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and board certification across five disciplines. He completed internal medicine training at Mayo Clinic Arizona, followed by nephrology fellowship at UCLA and critical care fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. For more than a decade, he has taught point-of-care ultrasound to residents and fellows and helped build one of the most advanced critical care ultrasound training programs in the country. He has served as an ultrasound director, organized national board review courses in critical care echocardiography, and received multiple teaching awards across training programs.

Dr. Patel’s academic work spans ultrasound education, Bayesian decision science, and machine learning in critical care. His teaching philosophy emphasizes physiologic understanding over rote image interpretation, using ultrasound as evidence to refine clinical judgment under uncertainty. He founded The Ultrasound Lab to expand high-quality, physiology-driven POCUS training to specialties that have traditionally underutilized it, including hospital medicine and nephrology.
